Adelaide United FC's current standing at the top of the Hyundai A-League has been rewarded with four players named in the Qantas Socceroos squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2011 qualifier against Indonesia in Jakarta on January 28.
Goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic, midfielder Paul Reid and defenders Robert Cornthwaite and Scott Jamieson made the 21 man squad which was announced by National Coach Pim Verbeek, the group made up entirely of players currently competing in the Hyundai A-League.
It is the second national team call up for the Adelaide United quartet in the past six months after they were included in a 28 man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Qatar back in October 2008.
Adelaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar says he is extremely pleased for the quartet and that their selections in the national squad are well deserved.
“I think it’s a great reward for the fantastic seasons and excellent performances that they’ve all been able to produce, and I’m sure I can speak on behalf of everyone at Adelaide United in wishing them all the best for the game against Indonesia,” Vidmar said.
Galekovic is one the in form goalkeepers in the country at present, his eight clean sheets in the Hyundai A-League this season coupled with The Reds’ fine defensive record throughout the 2008 AFC Champions League having a lot to do with the 27 year olds outstanding form.
Reid curled in his first Adelaide United goal to help The Reds to a point against the Wellington Phoenix yesterday as he continues to show he is one of the Hyundai A-League’s prime midfield movers, while Jamieson and Cornthwaite have been constantly among United’s best this season.
The four will be aiming to push their cause for a first senior national cap when The Reds take on the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Sunday in a Premiership deciding Hyundai A-League final round match before they assemble with the rest of the Qantas Socceroos squad in Jakarta.
Australia’s match against Indonesia kicks off at 11:00pm (ACDT) and all Qantas Socceroos matches are broadcast live and exclusive on FOX Sports.
