S.America roundup-Team bus stoned after Colombia derby

Santa Fe’s team bus was stoned following a Colombian derby while opponents Millonarios were whisked out of the stadium in armed police cars to protect them from their own supporters.

In Peru, Sport Boys, whose players say they are owed two months wages, forgot their troubles to beat Atletico Minero 2-1 while Bolivian championship leaders Universitario de Sucre had a player sent off for striking a ball at a ball boy.

COLOMBIA

Reserve goalkeeper Ramiro Sanchez suffered cuts to his face after being hit by broken glass during an attack on Santa Fe’s team bus following their 2-0 Bogota derby win over Millonarios.

Santa Fe players said in television interviews that Millonarios fans pelted the bus with stones and bottles as it left the El Campin stadium. Pictures showed the bus with one of its windows smashed.

Media reports said that Millonarios players left the stadium in armed police vans to protect them from their own fans, furious after the defeat reduced their chances of reaching the semi-final group stage.

Pictures showed a dummy Millonarios bus leaving the stadium to distract the fans.

On the pitch, first half goals from Hernando Patino and Leider Preciado ensured Santa Fe lead the Apertura championship with 30 points from 15 games while Millonarios are 14th with 18 points. Defending champions Atletico Nacional came from behind to beat America 3-2 and climb to tenth.

PERU

Sport Boys, whose players last week claimed they did not have enough money to take taxis to training, briefly forgot their problems with a 2-1 win over Atletico Minero.

Nick Montalva scored a 76th minute winner for the pink-shirted team from the port of Callao, who are bottom of the championship’s first stage with 11 points from 14 games.

The club are reported to be heavily in debt and the players say they have not been paid for two months. Sporting Cristal stayed top despite losing 1-0 at Melgar.

BOLIVIA

Universitario de Sucre captain Ronald Rivera was sent off for kicking a ball at a ball boy during the second half of the 1-1 draw at Real Potosi.

Championship leaders Universitario, in front through a first-half goal from Luis Sillero, were pegged back when Carlos Castilla equalised in the 74th minute.

PARAGUAY

Olimpia and Cerro Porteno, once the dominaant forces of Paraguayan football, both fell to embarrasing defeats.

Cerro were beaten 1-0 by 3 de Febrero while Olimpia crashed to a 4-0 defeat by Nacional. Cerro president Luis Pettengill later announced that coach Javier Torrente had left the club.

Leaders Libertad lost their 12-game unbeaten record at 2 de Mayo, Richard Alvarez scoring the only goal in the 68th minute.

ECUADOR

Leaders and titleholders LDU went down to their second defeat of the year, losing 2-1 at Tecnico Universitario.

Moises Cuero and Panfilo Escobar put Tecnico ahead after 22 minutes before a Joffre Guerron consolation. LDU are four points clear of Deportivo Cuenca and Deportivo Quito, who drew 0-0.

URUGUAY

River Plate, under flamboyant former Uruguay coach Juan Ramon Carrasco, went back to the top of the championship’s second stage by beating Bella Vista 2-0 with headed goals from Sergio Souza and Andree Gonzalez.

River have 28 points from 11 games and lead on goal difference from Nacional, who were held 1-1 by Liverpool.

Hector Acuna headed Liverpool in front in the 21st minute and, after Nacional were denied by a superb double save by Libya goalkeeper Luis de Agustini, Diego Vera equalised in the 66th.

CHILE

Universidad Catolica beat Universidad de Chile 2-0 in their Santiago derby thanks to first-half goals from forward Roberto Gutierrez and midfielder Gary Medel. Former Lazio and Juventus striker Marcelo Salas missed a second-half penalty for Universidad de Chile.

VENEZUELA

Deportivo Tachira’s unbeaten run in the championship’s second stage ended with a 2-0 defeat at Zamora. Evelio Hernandez scored both goals, the second a penalty, in the last half hour.

Tachira, who have 34 points from 13 games, are four points clear of Caracas FC, who beat Monagas 3-0. Third-placed Deportivo Anzoategui thrashed struggling Estrella Roja 7-1, helped by a hat-trick from striker Alexander Rondon.
