Dinamo Zagreb won their 10th Croatian league title on Saturday after a 2-1 win at bottom team Medjimurje Cakovec gave them an unassailable 19-point lead at the top with six matches remaining.
First-half goals from Davor Vugrinec and Sammir gave Dynamo a 2-0 lead before Mario Darmopil scored a consolation.
Veteran striker Vugrinec sent the champions on their way in the first minute when he turned in a Hrvoje Cale cross from close range and Brazilian midfielder Sammir added the second directly from a corner kick on the half-hour.
The home side, who have only a theoretical chance of avoiding relegation, made it a dramatic finish when Darmopil beat goalkeeper Ivan Kelava with a 25-metre drive.
Dynamo’s traditional rivals Hajduk Split stayed second with a 3-1 win at Zadar, where fans paid tribute to the home team’s winger Hrvoje Custic who died earlier this month after a freak on-pitch incident.
Custic hit a wall by the touchline with his head after going for a loose ball and died in hospital three days later.
The fans observed a minute’s silence, having placed flowers and Custic’s shirt on the spot where the incident occurred in Zadar’s home game against Cibalia Vinkovci.
