Jets Notch First Win

The Newcastle Jets earned their first win of their new campaign on Saturday, with a 1-0 victory over NSW State League side Bankstown City Lions.

It was the first hit-out for new recruits Adam Griffiths and Noel Spencer, both of whom looked solid for their new club. It was a game which also saw the return of crowd favourite Steve Eagleton.

Mark Bridge – fresh from his stint in training with the Qantas Socceroos - scored the lone goal of the game in the 40th minute. His strike partner Joel Griffiths pounced on a weak clearance, and squared the ball to an unmarked Bridge for the simple finish.

The Jets looked better for their run the previous Wednesday, maintaining possession for longer periods, and looking sharper overall. Ante Covic had a brilliant game back from a foot injury, thwarting numerous opportunities for the Bankstown side.

With a win under their belt, the Jets now prepare to leave for Port Macquarie on Tuesday, ahead of their Pre-Season Cup clash against the Perth Glory this Saturday.
