QUEENSLAND Roar youngster Chris Grossman believes supporters are in for a treat this weekend when Frank Farina’s new-look team is unveiled for the first time to the public at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
The Roar take on South African side Supersport United in the international blockbuster, with the main game kicking off at 3pm and marking the unofficial start to Queensland’s hopeful 2007/08 season, while also posing the first opportunity this year to unleash their new off-season acquisitions.
20-year-old Grossman, who will return to Suncorp under full contract on Sunday, said he was expecting a tough match but was confident his new side was good enough to enjoy a win this weekend and indeed a good season ahead.
“I can’t wait for the match on Sunday, it’ll be a good hit out against international opposition, and a big step up from the trial games we’ve been playing in the last few weeks,” said Grossman.
“From what I’ve seen of South African players in the past, Supersport are definitely going to be fit and fairly physical, but we’ll be ready and I think we have the team to do well.
“[New Brazilian midfielder] Marcinho is quality; some of the touches he has are just amazing and I think he’ll be a real asset this season. Hopefully he can get a few goals and take a load off the strikers. He was really good in our trial game against the Strikers, so I think it’s positive signs for the season ahead.
“Hopefully our supporters like the team Frank has put together for this season. Personally I’m excited and I think we’ve got a great blend of youngsters and experience. I think it’ll take a few games for everyone to get used to each other, but I think after that we’ve got a good blend and will do quite well.”
As for his own performance on the day, the level-headed midfielder says he’s hoping for a chance to once again prove himself to fans and coach alike.
“I’m just hoping to get some game time; over the last few weeks I’ve probably got a fair bit of time in trial games and I think I’ve done okay, so if I can get some game time on the weekend I’ll just be looking to do what I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks and keep that consistency up. I just want to do my best and see if I can make my way into the side.”
