Melbourne Victory today announced that versatile midfielder Michael Ferrante was free to pursue a contract with another club after two years of distinguished service with the Hyundai A-League Champions.
An early signing in Ernie Merrick’s inaugural squad after a European career which saw him captain the West Ham reserves, Ferrante was a mainstay of the Victory midfield which only narrowly missed finals action last season.
Version 2 of the Hyundai A-League saw Ferrante competing with Kevin Muscat, Grant Brebner and Fred for an all-important starting berth in midfield after an injury interrupted pre-season.
Merrick praised the 26-year-old for his contribution to his side. “Michael is too good a player to be sitting on the bench, and unfortunately he’s been a victim of circumstance this season,” he said. “He was an integral part of our Championship winning squad, making a contribution in both seasons of the Hyundai A-League.
“He had an outstanding first season with us, but after we brought Kevin forward from defence and imported Grant and Fred, Michael’s opportunities in midfield haven’t been forthcoming. His departure is by mutual consent, and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours and we’ll support him in his quest to find a new club.”
Merrick also paid tribute to Michael's work off the field. “Michael was one of our most obliging players off the park, and he was always happy to volunteer for public appearances. In fact he was the face of the club for all the league TV advertising. He made a great contribution to our club and I’m certain he’ll receive a warm welcome every time he returns to Telstra Dome.”
